Players of the Axie Infinity monster battle game NonFungible Tokens, or NFTs, transacted nearly $3.5 billion worth of NFTs in 2021, according to a recent report selected by the NonFungible Gaming Industry 2021. Sports market NBA Top Shot came in second and third with $827 million and community gaming platform Loot with $242 million. Developed by Vietnamese video game developer Sky Mavis in 2018, the game features creatures called "Axies" for players to collect and use. Completing daily quests, dueling other players, etc.
Each Axie is an NFT minted on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Completing tasks with Axies rewards players with Smooth Love Potions (SLP), which can be sold on cryptocurrency exchanges for cash, generating a revenue stream for players. Overall, Axie Infinity accounted for 19% of the estimated $17 billion in total NFT transactions last year. Last November, Axie Infinity gained significant popularity, especially among players from developing countries, where Axie Infinity can potentially earn more than minimum wage jobs.
However, gamers have complained to their developers that their earnings have dropped by 67% due to the price drop.5% in the last year. Although the price drop is partly due to increased token inflation as more players join and play. At the time of publication, there are nearly 2.7 million Axie players per month, compared to just over 1 million last March. But from July 2021 to date, the circulating supply of SLP has increased from 541.7 million to 5.13 billion. Added to this were a total of 112 blockchain games and 1.88 million active wallets. According to an analysis by NonFungible, these stats accounted for 2.18% of the total world gaming market in 2021.
